Fatina Abreek-Zub (TAU Lab of Spaces-in-Transition) will deliver the Detlef Mertins lecture on the Histories of Modernity. With an introduction by Ateya Khorakiwala (GSAPP) and a response by Ralph Goche (Barnard).

Fatina Abreek-Zub is an architect, architectural historian and Assistant Professor (Senior Lecturer) at the Azrieli School of Architecture, Tel-Aviv University. She is the founder of the Lab of Spaces-in-Transition, which investigate the relational intimate power between humanitarian and aid developmental regimes in conflict zones of the Global South, with a focus on the spatial materialization of forced migration and cross-cultural mobilities of people, knowledge and commodities. Her current project focuses on food insecurity in partitioned lands of conflict zones. She is the author of A Territory in Conflict: Eras of Development and Urban Architecture in Gaza, published by the University of Pittsburgh Press (2025), which has been awarded a Graham Foundation grant. Her research has appeared in leading peer-reviewed journals and book chapters including Environment and Planning D; C and E; Ethnic and Racial Studies; Citizenship Studies. Her article in the Journal of Refugee Studies received the 2025 Early Career Researcher Prize. Abreek-Zubiedat work has been recognized with receipt of several prestigious awards and grants, including The Rothschild fellowship; The Neubauer fellowship; The ISF grant; and the VATAT fellowship for Arabs.

The Detlef Mertins Lecture on the Histories of Modernity is an annual lecture in honor of the life and work of Detlef Mertins (1954-2011), endowed by Elise Jaffe + Jeffrey Brown. Previous speakers include Lucia Allais, Craig Buckley, Zeynep Cęlik Alexander, Ayala Levin, Anthony Acciavatti, and Sophie Hochhäusl.
