Activating the City

Jane Hall and Laura Taves speak about theirs respective works, Assemble in United Kingdom and Azulejaria in Favela da Maré, with collaborative projects that involve local communities.

Assemble are a collective which works across the fields of art, architecture and design. They began working together in 2010 and are comprised of 20 members. Assemble champion a working practice that is interdependent and collaborative, seeking to actively involve the public as both participant and collaborator in the on-going realisation of the work.

Atelier Azulejaria is a workshop and art collective made of craftswomen and artists who combine art and education with social and cultural activism. Azulejaria works on private and public projects with an educational focus. It aims at giving people who might not be able to afford an education, the ability to become professional craftspeople who are then able to earn a living while expressing themselves artistically.

Jane Hall Jane Hall is the inaugural recipient of the British Council Lina Bo Bardi Fellowship (2013) and founding member of the architecture collective Assemble. Jane’s own projects within the collective focus on collaborative practice between artists and architects, explored through exploratory installation and exhibition design.

Laura Taves Laura Taves founded Atelier Azulejaria in 2003. She is an architect, urbanist an artist who lives and works in Rio where she develops projects to help foster a dialogue between the city and its inhabitants while helping them question their social and cultural boundaries. She works since 2015 as Communities Relations Manager in Museu do Amanhã, acting directly with the inhabitants from the harbor zone in Rio.


Jane Hall e Laura Taves falam sobre seus respectivos trabalhos, Assemble no Reino Unido e Azulejaria na Favela da Maré, mostrando o desafio de lidar com a ativação de espaços públicos através de projetos colaborativos que envolvem a população local.

O Studio Assemble é um coletivo que transita pelos campos da arte, da arquitetura e do design. O grupo, formado em 2010, hoje soma 20 membros, que trabalham de forma interdependente e colaborativa, procurando envolver inclusive o público como colaborador e participante nos trabalhos realizados.

Atelier Azulejaria é um coletivo de artistas e artesãs especializadas, que combina produção artística e projetos educacionais à ações sociais, culturais e urbanas.Na cidade do Rio de Janeiro desde 2003, com ateliê localizado na região portuária do Rio, trabalha em parceria com esferas públicas e privadas com foco em projetos de arte e educação para crianças, jovens e adultos; capacitação de artesãs incluídas em programa de geração de renda; e projetos artísticos.

Jane Hall foi a primeira receptora da bolsa Lina Bo Bardi Fellowship (2013) e fundadora do coletivo de arquitetura Assemble. Os projetos autorais de Jane no coletivo objetivam a colaboração entre artistas e arquitetos, através do design de instalações e exibições.

Laura Taves Laura Taves fundou a Azulejaria em 2003. Artista, arquiteta e urbanista, vive e trabalha na cidade do Rio de Janeiro, onde desenvolve projetos nos quais, através da arte e da educação procuram discutir e atuar na cidade em processos de construção coletiva. Trabalha desde 2015 como gerente de Relações Comunitárias do Museu do Amanhã, atuando diretamente com os moradores da região portuária do Rio.
