Democratizing Preservation: A Career Trajectory

Part of Preservation Alumni’s Anti-Racism/Equity Initiative Alumni Speaker Series

Please join us for a lunch discussion by Emilie Evans ‘11 MSHP & MSUP.

Designed to be more conversation than presentation, this talk will share examples from Emilie’s own professional path post-GSAPP that demonstrate alternative and non-traditional approaches to an equity-minded career historic preservation.

This DIY preservation path originated as a desire to infuse a preservation ethos into atypical spaces, in pursuit of the democratization of resources and approaches inherent in the HP community beyond our niche circles to address inequities within housing quality, skilled trades development, and homeowner empowerment – specifically focusing on the built environment of minority-majority, post-industrial legacy cities. Attendees will hear about examples that hopefully will inspire them to lead with equity at the forefront as they forge their own creative professional path post-graduation.

Emilie Evans’ preservation career inspired her to co-found a home repair organization named Brick + Beam Detroit in 2015. She’s currently immersed in federal policy with Preservation Action – the only national organization dedicated exclusively to lobbying for the best preservation policies at the federal level.
