ENGAGEMENT, DIVERSITY, AND EQUITY IN PRESERVATION: DINNER & A CONVERSATION WITH ALUMNA LAUREN HOOGKAMER

Please join us on April 8th at 5:30 PM for dinner and a conversation with Lauren Hoogkamer in 300 Buell South. Use this form to sign up: https://forms.gle/WduzobJGhm34S5XF9.

Preservation Alumni’s Anti-Racism and Equity Initiative invites current HP students to its first in-person dinner discussion seeking to connect students with alumni whose work focuses on using preservation as a means of supporting diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives and to offer students candid career advice and guidance.

Our first alumna Lauren Hoogkamer (‘13 MSHP/MSUP) is a graduate of both the M.S. HP and UP programs. She currently serves as the Principal Planner leading the City of Tacoma’s Neighborhood Planning Program. She specializes in equitable outreach, engagement, DEIA, and communications for planning and preservation issues in this role and in her work with the National Alliance of Preservation Commissions and the non-profit Beyond Integrity.

The conversation with Lauren will explore her career path, discuss best practices in the field related to DEI issues, and what this means for students and their future careers.

Lauren Hoogkamer is the Principal Planner leading the City of Tacoma’s Neighborhood Planning Program. She specializes in equitable outreach, engagement, DEIA, and communications for planning and preservation issues. For seven years she served as the Assistant Historic Preservation Officer for the City of Tacoma where she managed the outreach and education program (including social media), as well as staffed the Landmarks Preservation Commission. Lauren holds an M.S. in Historic Preservation and an M.S. in Urban Planning from Columbia University, as well as a BA/BA in Print Journalism and History and a Minor in Business from the University of Southern California. She has received awards for journalism and poetry and has research published by the World Monuments Fund.

Lauren grew up in rural Lewis County, WA, but now lives in Tacoma with her husband, two sons, a dog, and cats. Lauren’s goals are to ensure that our built environment represents and meets the needs of our diverse community. Her work is inspired by her experiences as a multicultural woman– she is Mexican, Trinidadian, Black, Chinese, East Indian, European, and currently exploring her Latinx indigenous roots.
