RENCAA: Cross-disciplinary Perspectives on U.S. Commercial Real Estate

COVID-19 has disrupted broad swathes of the U.S. economy, and commercial real estate markets are no exception. To understand the various ways the current crisis is impacting commercial real estate in 2020 and beyond, please join the Columbia Alumni Association on Thursday, May 28 at 1:00pm for a web panel, Cross-disciplinary Perspectives on U.S. CRE. The panelists will provide their perspectives on the current market, and how they are navigating these challenging times.

Featured Speakers

Suzanne deVries Decker ‘06LAW is a partner resident in Fried Frank’s New York office and a member of the Firm’s Real Estate Department. Ms. Decker represents real estate developers, private equity firms, investment banks and REITs in a wide variety of commercial real estate transactions, including acquisitions, financings and joint ventures. She has significant experience representing both borrowers and lenders in mortgage, mezzanine, and preferred equity financings of office, hotel and multifamily properties and portfolios. Suzanne holds a JD from Columbia Law School and a BA from Dartmouth College.

Ryan Severino '04SIPA is the chief economist at JLL where he manages the economics team and is responsible for global and regional economic research, analysis and forecasting as well as property market forecasting. Prior to JLL, Ryan severed as senior economist and director of research at Reis in the research and economics department, the team responsible for the firm’s market forecasting, valuation, and portfolio analytics services. Prior to Reis, Ryan served in a number of research positions for investment management firms such Starwood Capital Group and Prudential Real Estate Investors. Additionally, Ryan is an adjunct professor of real estate finance and economics at Columbia University and New York University. Ryan holds a master’s degree from Columbia University, a bachelor’s degree from Georgetown University, and is a CFA Charterholder.

Ross Smotrich '83BUS is a 25 year veteran of the REIT industry, most recently serving as Managing Director and senior REIT analyst at Barclays Capital. Mr. Smotrich has ranked in the Institutional Investor’s “All-America Research Team” survey nine times and has twice been named to The Wall Street Journal’s “All-Star Analysts” survey (earnings forecasting). Before moving to sell-side research, Ross was a real estate banker for Chemical Bank doing lending, investment banking and workout. He earned an MBA from Columbia University in finance/real estate and a BA from the University of Pennsylvania in diplomatic history/international economics.
