ARCH4892-1 / Fall 2019

Data Visualization for Architecture, Urbanism and the Humanities

In this course students gain conceptual and technical knowledge so they can build interactive, public facing, web-based visualizations that are effective and engaging. This is a class that combines key concepts in information visualization with its hands-on production.

The practice of visualizing data sits at the intersection of multiple disciplines and is useful in many fields. Students are encouraged to bring datasets and domain expertise from their backgrounds to class discussions and especially their final projects. Students do not need a background in programming but should be prepared to jump into learning how to write code immediately. We will start with tools that students bring with them, from illustrator, to python, to watercolor. We will develop familiarity with the design principles of visualizations while following a crash course in javascript.

The practice of visualizing data is platform/technology agnostic. However, particular practices in programming currently dominate the field of its professional practice. In this class, we use open and free tools that allow new programmers to start writing code immediately. We will be using a text editor to write javascript, a local server to develop, the browser inspector to debug, and github pages to host.

It is important to note that effective visualizations are built by judicious and appropriate use of techniques and technologies, not their evident abundance within a project. Your visualization projects will include some element of interactivity and programming, but are never evaluated on how much code you are able to incorporate.
