Potlatch: Issue 4

Paperback

Colliding the ancient notion of “the gift” with today’s architectural practice and education, Potlatch is the journal of Columbia University GSAPP’s Potlatch Lab.

This special fourth issue comprises a two-day long interview with Vincent Scully conducted by Potlatch editor, Yehuda Safran, and frequent contributor, Daniel Sherer, at Scully’s home in Lynchburg, Virginia. Their conversation covers a broad span of topics—from Henry Russell Hitchcock’s impact on Scully’s approach to the Shingle Style; to Henri Focillon’s lasting influence on the work of the architectural historian; to his relations with Frank Lloyd Wright, Le Corbusier, Paul Rudolph, Louis Kahn, Robert Venturi, Ernesto Rogers, and Aldo Rossi. What emerges is Scully’s unparalleled appreciation of, and engagement with, all manifestations of human culture.
