Artificial Intelligence at GSAPP

I. Artificial Intelligence Tools at CU + GSAPP

AI Toolkit: Columbia’s Secure AI Workspace

AI Toolkit is Columbia University’s secure AI platform.

AI Toolkit can be accessed directly through this link, and more information is available here.

This resource provides access to multiple leading large language models, in a secure environment, for each user, and includes many of the cutting-edge models such as:

  • Anthropic [Claude Opus 4.8]
  • Open AI [ChatGPT Sol 5.6]
  • Google [Gemini Pro 3.1]

All Columbia users are entitled to a free daily usage allowance of $0.15 — based on actual daily usage.

GSAPP Full Time Faculty & Students will be granted a larger allocation of daily access to these models.

Token efficiency can also be vastly improved by mixing and matching the other 25+ AI models available to the Columbia University community.

AI Toolkit at GSAPP: Best Models for Design & Visual Analysis

Each of the leading large language models available in the AI Toolkit offer different opportunities for GSAPP students to research, analyze, synthesize and generate images and other visual data.

Best Models by Task
Task Best Pick Why
Image Generation (concept, atmosphere, mood, ideation) Columbia Image Generation Agent Native, CU-approved, in-Toolkit — no data leaves the Columbia-governed environment
Visual Image Analysis (critique renderings, boards, drawings) GPT-5.6 Sol Best current multimodal reasoning for structured critique
Multi-Sheet Set Review Claude Opus 4.8 Long-context strength for cross-sheet consistency
Prompt Engineering for the Image Agent GPT-5.6 Luna or Claude Sonnet 5 Produce precise, controlled prompts to feed the Image Agent
Research & Theory Synthesis Claude Opus 4.8 Deep PDF reading and nuanced synthesis
Methodology Pressure-Testing o3 Reasoning-focused; finds logical flaws
Fast Iteration Gemini Flash 3.6 Low-cost, quick turnaround
