This week, GSAPP’s summer programs culminate with the End of Summer Exhibition.

Last week, MSCDP’s Final Reviews took place August 5, sharing research proposals that bring together methods, experiments, communities of practice, and project frameworks to address pressing contemporary questions.

On view from August 7 to September 10, the End of Summer Exhibition gathers work from MSAAD, MSAUD, MSCDP, and MSRED. The exhibition reflects GSAPP as a laboratory for critical inquiry that advances new ways of understanding and transforming the world.

Issue 77 of the Avery Review presents the winners of the journal’s ninth annual Essay Prize, celebrating the critical writing of students on built, destroyed, and imagined environments.

First prize is awarded to Sofia Rudi Kent for her essay “Mythical Infrastructure: The Strait of Messina Bridge,” which examines Sicily’s perpetually speculated Strait of Messina Bridge, showing how infrastructure can operate as political myth without it ever being built.

Second prize is awarded to Kassidy Miller and Patrick Rearden, Noa Mori Machover, and Nina Tiêu.

Columbia GSAPP is saddened by the passing of Robin Middleton, Professor Emeritus of Architectural History, whose scholarship shaped generations of architectural historians.

A member of Columbia’s Department of Art History and Archaeology from 1987 to 2003, Middleton was closely connected to GSAPP through his friendships with many members of our faculty and the doctoral students who studied with him. He also played an instrumental role in the life of the Avery Architectural & Fine Arts Library, where his papers are now preserved. His intellectual depth, and close engagement with primary sources, left a lasting mark on the study of architectural history.

Columbia GSAPP honors his legacy.
