Reciprocal Park

St. Nicolas Park NYC was the first established park in the city. Because of the shortage of funds, there’s only one seasonal gardener for landscaping. Friends of St. Nicholas Park NYC is a non-profit organization established by local community. It holds cleaning day every week and some other activities in the park. According to Jane Hutton, movement of construction materials can shape the landscape of the material origin and material destination. Similarly, for St. Nicholas Park, the movement of salvage material and invasive species promots social benefits. People in local community take part in park maintenance, at the same time gain benefits from the park. In addition, the concept of ‘salvage’ happens in not only construction materials, but also invasive species that are considered as harmful product from the park. Held by St. Nicholas Park NYC, this new park system is mainly organized by the idea of CSA rewards. People from local community take part into the recycle process of concrete and the salvage process for a slide-drain. As rewards, they may get fertilizer, food, and movable cart for celebration.
