AAD Arguments with Charlotte Malterre-Barthes
June 3, 11:15am
Wood Auditorium
Charlotte Malterre-Barthes is an architect, urban designer, and writer. She is Assistant Professor of Architectural and Urban Design at EPFL, where she is the founding director of RIOT — a research laboratory dedicated to systemic change in architecture and the construction industry — and co-director of the MAS in Urban and Territorial Design with ETH Zürich. Her work centers on the political economy of construction, material extraction, and the climate emergency, and engages research, writing, and advocacy in equal measure. While Assistant Professor at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, she launched ‘A Global Moratorium on New Construction’ (2021), arguing for a profound reform of planning disciplines and development protocols — now published as A Moratorium on New Construction (Sternberg Press/MIT Press, 2025).
She is the author or co-author of several books, including Eileen Gray: A House under the Sun (Nobrow, 2019) and Migrant Marseille (Ruby Press, 2020), and edits The Political Economy of Space—On Architecture series (Hatje Cantz, 2024–ongoing). A founding member of the Parity Group and the Parity Front (Meret Oppenheim Prize 2023) and ambassador for HouseEurope! — the European Citizens’ Initiative for renovation over demolition — she holds a Ph.D. from ETH Zurich. She co-curated the 12th International Architecture Biennale of São Paulo (2019) and has exhibited at MoMA, the Venice Biennales, the Storefront for Art and Architecture, and the Seoul Architecture and Urbanism Biennale, among others.
Introduction by Lucia Galaretto & Response by Lucia Galaretto, Amaia Sanchez-Velasco & Jorge Valiente-Oriol, & AAD Students

About the Museum of the City of New York
The Museum of the City of New York explores the people, places, and ideas that shape New York’s iconic character.
The Museum of the City of New York was founded in 1923 by Henry Collins Brown, a Scottish-born writer with a vision for a populist approach to the city. The Museum was originally housed in Gracie Mansion, the future residence of the Mayor of New York. Hardinge Scholle succeeded Henry Brown in 1926 and began planning a new home for the Museum. The City offered land on Fifth Avenue on 103rd-104th Streets and construction for Joseph H. Freedlander’s Georgian Colonial-Revival design for the building started in 1929 and was completed in 1932. During the next few decades, the Museum amassed a considerable collection of exceptional items, including several of Eugene O’Neill’s handwritten manuscripts, a complete room of Duncan Phyfe furniture, 412 glass negatives taken by Jacob Riis and donated by his son, a man’s suit worn to George Washington’s Inaugural Ball, and the Carrie Walter Stettheimer dollhouse, which contains a miniature work by Marcel Duchamp. Today the Museum’s collection contains approximately 750,000 objects, including prints, photographs, decorative arts, costumes, paintings, sculpture, toys, and theatrical memorabilia.

Ishita Ghosh is an urban planner and designer at Design Workshop’s Austin Studio, and holds a Master of Science in Architecture and Urban Design from Columbia GSAPP, where she graduated in the 2020–2021 cohort. She is an observant and curious explorer of urban fabrics across cities, with a portfolio that spans large-scale comprehensive planning and the ecological restoration of public parks. Her work reflects a thoughtful and analytical approach to understanding place across diverse contexts, with experience in comprehensive plans, downtown master plans, park master plans, unified development codes, and community planning toolkits. She focuses on translating technical and research-driven insights into clear, grounded design narratives that respond to the goals of each project.
Tarana Hafiz is an Associate and Project Manager in the Houston studio of Design Workshop, with nearly 15 years of experience in urban design and planning. Trained in architecture at the undergraduate level and a graduate of Columbia University GSAPP (2011–2012), her work spans community development, public realm design (trails, streets, parks, waterways), historic preservation, and cultural and strategic planning. Her approach centers on advancing equity in the built environment through co-creation and participatory design, translating complex ideas alongside underserved and often untapped communities into clear, implementable strategies that bridge design, policy, and community priorities.
