The Status of the Document: Hito Steyerl, Tom Keenan, and Mark Wasiuta

Mon, Oct 19    12pm

Hito Steyerl, Thomas Keenan, and Mark Wasiuta discuss the role of “the document” in their work. This event takes place on the occasion of the launch of Mark Wasiuta’s book The Archival Exhibition: A Decade of Research at the Arthur Ross Architecture Gallery, 2006–2016.

Hito Steyerl is a filmmaker and writer based in Berlin. Her work addresses media, technology, and the global circulation of images through video installations, digital environments, and writing. She is Professor for Emergent Digital Media at Munich Art Academy.

Thomas Keenan is the director of the Human Rights Project and Professor of Comparative Literature at Bard College. He is the author of Fables of Responsibility (1997); and, with Eyal Weizman, Mengele’s Skull (2012). He has served on the boards of a number of human rights organizations and journals, including WITNESS, Scholars at Risk, The Crimes of War Project, The Journal of Human Rights, and Humanity. Thomas teaches courses on human rights, media theory, and literature.

Mark Wasiuta is Senior Lecturer in Architecture at Columbia GSAPP and Co-Director of the Critical, Curatorial and Conceptual Practices in Architecture program. His work has been exhibited widely, including at the Graham Foundation, LAXArt, Storefront for Art and Architecture, the Venice Architecture Biennale, the Sharjah Architecture Triennale, Het Nieuwe Instituut in Rotterdam, MAXXI, and elsewhere. Recent Exhibitions include Frederick Kiesler: Vision Machines at the Jewish Museum in New York City and The Machine at the Heart of Man: Doxiadis’ Informational Modernism at the Onassis Foundation in Athens, Greece.
