Adam Lowe

Adam Lowe founded in 2001 the multi-disciplinary workshop Factum Arte in Madrid, built around a team of artists, technicians and conservators dedicated to digital mediation; both in the production of works for contemporary artists and in the realization of facsimiles as part of a coherent approach to preservation. The work of Factum Arte is internationally renowned for setting new standards in digital documentation that are redefining the relationship between originality and authenticity. In 2009, Lowe founded the Factum Foundation for Digital Technology in Conservation, dedicated to the development and application of high resolution recording technologies to the preservation, study and dissemination of cultural Heritage.

In 2014, an exact facsimile of the burial chamber of Tutankhamun was installed by factum Arte at the entrance to the Valley of the Kings, a project that received a large amount of media attention. This work was the first stage of the Theban Necropolis Preservation Initiative: Factum Foundation’s commitment to document the Pharaonic tombs in Luxor, simultaneously transferring skills and technology to local teams, in an attempt to facilitate sustainable tourism. The next phase of this initiative, the recording of the tomb of Seti I, started in May 2016. Factum Arte’s approach to monitoring the condition of important sites and creating exact facsimiles is transforming the way cultural heritage is managed.

Other projects carried out by Factum Arte include: the re-materialisation of Caravaggio’s Nativity with Saint Francis and Saint Lawrence (2015), the recording of the sculptures on the façade’s of the Basilica of San Petronio in Bologna (2012), the recording of the Sala Bologna in the Vatican and production of an exact facsimile of the south wall (2011), the facsimile of Leonardo’s Last Supper (2008), the facsimile of Veronese’s Wedding at Cana (2007), the recording and reconstruction of the Eastern End of the Throne room of Ashurnasirpal II (2006) and the facsimile of the tomb of Thutmose III (2004), among many others. For these and other works, Lowe has worked with many public and private institutions and museums such as the National Gallery (London), Museo del Prado (Madrid), Musée du Louvre (Paris), Vatican Museums, National gallery of Art (Washington DC), Rijksmuseum (Amsterdam), Fondazione Giorgio Cini (Venice), Basilica of San Petronio (Bologna), the Royal Collection (London) and Sir John Soane’s Museum (London).

Lowe has curated and participated in a number of exhibitions, including Penelope’s Labour, weaving words and images (Venice, 2011), The Arts of Piranesi (Venice, 2010), and Editing Originality (Madrid, 2008), to name but a few.

His written work has been extensively published, and his contribution to the world of academia has been significant, in the form of lectures and courses at various universities and cultural institutions. In 2013 he was made a Visiting Professor at Central St Martin’s, London and in 2016 he was appointed Adjunct Professor of Historic Preservation at Columbia University, New York.

Adam Lowe has been awarded the Microsoft Award for Scientific Humanities in 2010 (Sciences Po, École des Arts Politiques, Paris) and the Calcografia Nacional Award for Innovation in Print in 2001 (Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, Madrid).

GSAPP Conversations #5: Carlos Bayod Lucini and Adam Lowe in Conversation with Jorge Otero-Pailos

Jorge Otero-Pailos, Director of Columbia GSAPP’s Historic Preservation Program, speaks with Carlos Bayod Lucini and Adam Lowe of Factum Arte. Lowe and Bayod Lucini jointly taught an advanced studio in Historic Preservation at Columbia GSAPP in the Fall of 2016, which involved the documentation of the medieval church of San Baudelio de Berlanga in Spain, as well as some of its paintings in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Cloisters.
