Phu Duong

Phu Duong is an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Urban Design program at Columbia GSAPP. He is a senior urban designer working on domestic and international work in the New York office of NBBJ. He serves on Housing/ULURP and Transportation committees as a Community Board member in Brooklyn. He is also an active member of the Planning and Urban Design Committee of the New York Chapter of the American Institute of Architects. His interests lie in urban public space and the role that design representation plays to shape contemporary urban design practice. Phu has been developing the digital curriculum in the urban design program since 2007. He received his Bachelor of Architecture from Washington State University (1996) and Master of Science in Architecture and Urban Design from Columbia University (1999). He is a member of the AIA and a LEED accredited professional.

Phu previously taught at Syracuse University and Parsons the New School for Design. As visiting lecturer he has organized design workshops at the Izmir University of Economics, Washington University and the Oslo School of Architecture. He has served on design juries at Yale, New Jersey Institute of Technology, City College, Ohio State University and the University of Pennsylvania.

He curated and exhibited in “Projective Crossings" at Syracuse University (2005). As founder of Approach Design Office, he was the media designer for “Landmarkings: 12 Journeys through 9/11 Living Memorials,” a video installation in a collaboration with the USDA Forest Service and Parsons (2007). At Syracuse University he received a Vision Fund Grant (2006) to produce “Resurfacing Upstate,” a media project integrated with the M. Arch Program curriculum, and he was selected as the Faculty Technology Associate in 2007. He is a co-editor of Constellations: Constructing Urban Design Practices (2007). Other publication citations include Dialogue Magazine and Arkitektnytt.
