James Khamsi

James Khamsi (RA, AIA) is Adjunct Assistant Professor at Columbia GSAPP. He received his Bachelor of Architecture from Cornell University, and his Masters of Architecture with distinction from the Harvard Graduate School of Design. His research and teaching have also included positions at Cornell University, the University of Toronto and Harvard.

Khamsi is principal of FIRM Architecture and Design, an emerging New York City-based practice he founded in 2010. FIRM works at the intersection of architecture, urbanism and art, and is dedicated to the expansions and preservation of public realms and public networks in cities at a moment when urban environments are increasingly being developed through private spaces and interests.

Khamsi has practiced in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. He has worked with leading architects, most notably with Farshid Moussavi and Foreign Office Architects in London, UK. He has delivered projects across a range of scales - from urban masterplans and public infrastructure to private interiors and furniture pieces. For the past four years, he has been working collaboratively with Toronto-based artists Jennifer Marman and Daniel Borins on public art and public space projects. The SFC Bridge, a product of that collaboration, opened earlier this year in Toronto.

His work has been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art, New York. His work has been published in Actar’s Verb series, MAS Context, Volume, MONU, Scapegoat and Interior Design magazine. He is the editor of Huburbs: Transit and Urbanism in the Greater Toronto Hamilton Area (University of Toronto, 2012).
