Diana Palermo’s Inventing Ritual Workshop is an interactive performance where the audience is invited to build their own spiritual ritual. The workshop is inspired by the artist’s relationship to benedicaria, a specific form of Sicilian folk spirituality, and their experience as a teacher. Diana instructs selected participants to complete worksheets in order to develop and enact their own ritual on-site. This workshop is designed to play with process, dissecting or demystifying the mystery inherent in spiritual practices. The activities are prescribed and clinical while relying heavily on the subjective and unquantifiable nature of intuition. The artist asks that you come with a sense of humor and an open and receptive mind.
Inventing Ritual is part of Works in Progress (WiP). Works in Progress is an ongoing series of events that brings together graduate students and faculty in Columbia’s Visual Arts Program, Department of Art History and the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation (GSAPP).
