Presentation as Strategic Planning Tools

Public presentations provide powerful tools to focus attention and influence the outcome of planning and design processes. When planners stand up in front of a community group to present a neighborhood up-zoning proposal or architects speak to review boards about design schemes, to see their initiatives realized speakers need to clearly communicate the merits of their visions. Strong presenters can transform even the most doubtful project stakeholder into a planning and design advocate. Conversely, great ideas, poorly communicated, rarely get materialized.

Issues in International Development Planning

This course will focus on elements of planning practice for work in cities in low and middle income countries. The course will explore selected urban issues in depth. We will focus on understanding what can be done to address these issues; which types of initiatives and projects are working and which are not; and which of the effective practices can be taken to scale. We will attempt to identify the obstacles to achieving scale and the strategies to overcome these obstacles. Specific topics will vary by year.

Tourism Plannng in International Perspective

"Travel, for those with their eyes and ears open, is a great university on the go. The classes and lectures are in the world's museums, galleries, cathedrals, and great buildings. They are also held in all the deep forests, alpine meadows, great deserts, and sweeping shorelines of this planet. Best of all, you are your own professor." Lewis N. Clark.

Introduction to Environmental Planning

This course will provide an introduction to the background and practice of urban environmental planning. It is a survey class and is divided into four sections. The first section includes four classes (with the introduction). These classes introduce students to the scale of global urbanization, the environmental crisis, present a history of environmental planning thought and introduce contemporary environmental planning processes and foundations. In the second section, we focus on environmental planning for public health.
