Studio

The Architectural Design Studio encourages students to experiment with various techniques of conceptual and spatial modeling for the development of their site/analytical and architectural proposals. The media of drawing, model, and photography are explored in the Design Studio to the services of conceptually rich and rigorous design interventions.

Admissions

The program is designed for students who have completed their sophomore year at an accredited college or university or students who have received a bachelor's degree. Previous study in architecture, planning, or preservation is not required. Undergraduate students must have the written support of their home institution. To apply for admission, the student should complete the on-line application and submit the following materials to the Office of Admissions: official transcript of academic record, letter of recommendation from the major adviser, academic dean, or business reference (current employer), supporting the application to the program and attesting to the student's ability to live and study abroad, and a $75 nonrefundable application fee payable to Columbia University. Admissions decisions are mailed out shortly after all application materials are received.

Curriculum

All students applying to the program must choose a studio component in either Architecture or Urban Studies. Each option provides 32 points of course work to be completed in two terms. Students have the option of enrolling for the fall term only, however spring enrollment is contingent upon successful completion of the fall semester, or poses previous education in architectural studies. Courses are taught by faculty members of the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation, and by professional architects, planners, and preservationists in both cities.
