Autonomy is the deliberate act of deciding on a different relationship between individuals and the inherited system of knowledge. Since the Enlightenment human evolution has been shaped by a powerful system of knowled ge and production - capitalism - and autonomy has been the struggle of politics and the arts against the heteronomy imposed by that system.
