In a complex-structured city in which the interactions among parts intensify; in which the number of decision makers and cultural scenarios overlap, interconnect, and sometimes collide; in which the temporal dimensions of the citizens are dissimilar; in which local and global, physical and virtual dimensions co-exist, it is necessary to identify a set of design tools which could respond to design complexity.

Social Cave - Milano Furniture Fair 2011 - Non LINEAR SOLUTIONS UNIT

An interactive physical installation by the Non-linear Solutions Unit
In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the furniture fair, the Salone Satellite chief curator Marva Griffin invited the architecture and design research Lab NSU at GSAPP to develop a small pavillon project in response to the question, in what direction is design heading.

The Social Cave installation is a project developed by Caterina Tiazzoldi, the director of the research Lab NSU,  in collaboration with 21 GSAPP international students and with interaction designers Mirko Arcese and Luca Biada. The design obtained with a parametric assembly of 100% recyclable  polystyrene polygons and a intractive platform engaged the relation between physical and virtual socialization.
