Columbia MsRED Alumni Association Mission and Guidelines

Mission Statement

The Columbia MsRED Alumni Association, under the umbrella of the Columbia GSAPP Alumni Association, serves as a vital link between the Real Estate Development Program alumni, real estate professionals and organizations, current students, and the alumni of other GSAPP programs. The Association has a three-part mission:

   * To provide a forum in which alumni and affiliates can network and interact for business, social, employment and educational opportunities.
   * To provide support and guidance to the Masters in Real Estate Development Program in order to promote its image and standing within the academic and business communities.
   * To serve as an important fundraising vehicle to support the Masters in Real Estate Development Program.

Guidelines

Function of Guidelines

There shall be the following Guidelines whose sections shall govern and direct the MsRED Alumni Association. These Guidelines may be amended from time to time by act of a two-thirds vote of the MsRED Alumni Association Council and approving resolution of the GSAPP Assistant Dean of Development and Alumni Relations.

Section 1.0
MsRED Alumni Association Council Organization

The MsRED Alumni Association Council will meet four times per year.
The MsRED Alumni Association Council shall consist of the following officers: President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary and 5-7 Council Members.
GSAPP's Associate Director of Alumni Relations, GSAPP's Associate Director of Development, and the MsRED Program Coordinator, while not Council Members, are all invited to attend Council meetings. At least one of these staff members will attend each meeting.

Section 1.1
MsRED Alumni Association Council Position Descriptions

The following is expected of each Council Member

   * Dedication to the Masters in Real Estate Development Program and GSAPP
   * Commitment to participate and attendance at meetings (attending at least 3 of 4 meetings per year, with a minimum of at least one in-person attendance per year)
   * Annual contributions to the MsRED Program or other areas of GSAPP

The MsRED Alumni Association Council Members shall also have duties as delineated by office:

   * President – Head of the organization, sets annual agenda, sets meeting agenda, presides over meetings, is a member of the MsRED Program Board of Advisors, and designates him/herself or another MsRED Alumni Association Officer to serve on the GSAPP Alumni Association Board.
   * Vice President – Supports the President and assumes his/her duties when the President is not available.
   * Treasurer – Oversees budget and financial reporting in conjunction with the Associate Director of Alumni Relations.
   * Secretary – Maintains the organization's meeting notes and paper/electronic records and serves as lead person on communications to alumni and to GSAPP Alumni Relations.
   * Council Members (5-7) – organized as leaders for social and education events, website and database, alumni-student relations, fundraising, and/or other groups as determined by the MsRED Alumni Association Council.

Section 1.2
Nomination Process

Any MsRED Alumnus may nominate or be nominated for office. Once a year, the Nominating Committee will collect and vet all nominations, and approve continuance of service at the end of terms. The first Nominating Committee will consist of the immediate past Chair of the MsRED Alumni Association Planning Committee (thereafter replaced by the immediate past President of the MsRED Alumni Association Council), GSAPP's Assistant Dean of Development and Alumni Relations, GSAPP's Associate Director of Alumni Relations, MsRED's Program Coordinator and three at large alumni, who are not on the Council, chosen by the past President and the Staff. The Council will be notified before the Nominating Committee convenes. No member of the Nominating Committee is eligible to become an officer as a result of nominations, but may become a Council Member.

Section 1.3
Terms

MsRED Alumni Association Council Member terms are 3 years. Members may serve consecutive terms in the same role or are eligible to assume new leadership roles either before or at the end of their terms, with approval by the Nominating Committee, but may not serve more than nine consecutive years on the Council. Council Members must take at least one year off after serving nine consecutive years, but are eligible for re-nomination after required time off.

The President is the one office that may not serve back to back consecutive terms.

Section 2.0
Budget Process

MsRED Alumni Association Council submits the MsRED Alumni Association's upcoming fiscal year (July 1 – June 30) proposed budget for the Dean's approval in the spring of each year. The GSAPP Associate Director of Alumni Relations or another GSAPP Development staff person will process disbursement of approved funds for MsRED Alumni Association activities.

On a case by case basis, when funds are needed for MsRED Alumni Association activities that exceed the normal budget, the Council, in consultation with the GSAPP Office of Development, may raise funds which will then be held at GSAPP and earmarked for specific MsRED Alumni Association activities.

COLUMBIA ALUMNI ASSOCIATION

The Columbia Alumni Association (CAA) is a free, no RSVP-required association of all University alumni. The goal of the organization is to strengthen the bonds between Columbians of all University schools, worldwide, through events, programs, and online resources.

The idea is simple: There is strength in the collective talents of University alumni, and open communications can help alumni and Columbia benefit from that strength.
