5. Exporting 3D Data from ArcSCENE Through SketchUp 5

Exporting Using the SketchUp 5 Plugin

A 3D Visualization can be easily exported from ArcScene into your favorite modeling program through the SketchUp 5 plugin.

1. Select only the elements you need to export.ArcScene may crash if you attempt to export too much data at once.

2. Once you have your elements selected, click on the SketchUp 5 Tool.

3. A dialogue will appear. Select the shapefile from which you are exporting. Check "Extrude by field" and select the field that indicates your extrusion heights. Click "Browse" to navigate to the folder where you want to save your SketchUp file and name your file. Click "OK." A dialogue should appear saying "Export to SketchUp Complete," and SketchUp will launch automatically.

4. In SketchUp, Click "Zoom Extents" to see your model.

5. To separate the elements of an extruded volume into lines and planes, right click on a volume and select "Explode."

6. To export from SketchUp, Click "File" > "Export" > "3D Model." A dialogue will appear, allowing you to export your model as a .3ds (or other) file.
