The Urban Land Institute is a nonprofit research organization committed to promoting best land use policy and real estate development practice worldwide. At the annual conference, many of the nation’s real estate, urban planning, and architectural leaders convene to share their knowledge and encourage discourse on emerging trends, best practices, strategies, success stories, and discoveries relating to real estate development. The entire MSRED program was thrilled to attend this year’s conference in Denver, Colorado. In addition to attending the plethora of seminars on subjects from the housing bubble to green development, students were given the opportunity to network and mingle with representatives of over one hundred development companies. Keynote speakers included Peter Calthorpe, Award Winner of the 2006 ULI J.C. Nichols Prize, General Colin L. Powell, 65th Secretary of State, Robert Redford, Actor, Director, and Producer, and Ray Kurzweil, Inventor at Kurzweil AI.net.

The Columbia University MSRED was honored to coordinate and lead three sessions at the conference: Infill Development, Repositioning Strategies, and Careers in Real Estate. Two of the three panels were comprised completely of MSRED alumni. The Infill Development seminar explored the art and science of infill development, and sought to teach the maximization of value from the small scale, underperforming sites that create the missing pieces in urban fabric. Repositioning and Turnaround Strategies explored proven techniques recommended for repositioning assets, and was presented in a nine step format that encourages new concepts. The Careers in Real Estate panel, led by real estate industry senior executives, executive recruiters, developers, pension financial advisors, and consulting practicers, gave insight on career tracks and how to optimize professional behaviors. All seminars were thoroughly enjoyed by Columbia students and ULI attendees alike.

MSRED Alumni Mary Anderson, Christopher Frampton, and David Lukes gather with Director Michael Buckley to lead a seminar on infill development.
