This tutorial will introduce you to techniques for lighting interior spaces in Maya. For this excercise you will primarily be learning how to manipulate area lights.

1.
-Lunch GI_Joe with 32 lights.
-Select the 'sphereLight' group in the outliner and scale it so that it
covers the entire building as showing in fig1.

-In the outliner select the 'skyLight_group' and change the intensity
and color as shown in fig2.
-The sky color was desaturated to almost white.

-Select the 'groundLight_group' and change the 'Ground Color' to an off
white and the 'Ground Intensity' as shown in fig3.
-At this point you should do a test render to evaluate the lighting that
the light dome is providing.
-The scene should look dim as if little light is coming from outside.
-This will be compensated by a series of area lights.

-Create and place an area light right below the light channel on the
ceiling.
-Scale the light to the size of the light channel.
-Change the 'Intensity to 0.25.
-Click On the 'Use Depth Map Shadows' button, change the 'Dmap
Resolution' to 128 and increase the 'Dmap Filter Size' to 4.
-After this, duplicate this area light and place one right below each
light channel.
-All area lights used in this scene should have these values for 'Dmap
Resolution' and 'Dmap Filter Size'.
-These values are shown in fig4

-Do a test render.
-Change the 'Dmap Bias' to 0.010 as shown in fig5. This will avoid
shadow artifacts.

-Create and place an area light with outside the building as shown in
fig6.
-Change the the 'Intensity to 2'.
-Dmap shadows is on.
-'Dmap Resolution' is 128.
-'Dmap Filter Size' to is 4.

-Create and place on Area Light as shown in fig7.
-This light is placed behind the counter and above to light the behind
the counter area.
-Change the 'Intensity to 0.7 and the Shadow values as shown.
-Make three copies and place them as shown in fig7.

-Create one Spot Light with and change the settings as shown in fig8.
-Make 5 copies and place them behind the columnade and right below the
wood ceiling.

-Create one Area Light with the settings shown if fig9.
-Place this light behind the back wall pointing at the curved wall.

-Create and place on Area Light as shown in fig10.
-Change the 'Intensity to 0.45.
-Change the 'Dmap Shadow' values as in previous Area Lights
