TUESDAY, JANUARY 23rd, 6:30PM
Storefront for Art and Architecture
97 Kenmare Street, New York

PETER EISENMAN, KENNETH FRAMPTON, MARIO GANDELSONAS, and ANTHONY VIDLER will discuss OPPOSITIONS, LOTUS, and ARQUITECTURAS BIS.

In conjunction with the exhibition CLIP/STAMP/FOLD: THE RADICAL ARCHITECTURE OF LITTLE MAGAZINES 196x197, Storefront for Art and Architecture is pleased to present the fourth event in the series LITTLE MAGAZINES / SMALL TALKS.

The appearance of Oppositions in September 1973 catalyzed the growing importance of theoretical and historical criticism within architectural culture. Published by the Institute for Architecture and Urban Studies, Oppositions represented a new genre of magazine in the American scene, attached neither to a traditional architectural school, nor looking to play the role of a professional review. From the criticism of contemporary projects to important reassessments of the architecture of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, Oppositions brought together diverse positions and approaches, spanning formal analysis, the Marxism of the Frankfurt School, and post-structuralist linguistic theory. In the following decade Oppositions would be instrumental in introducing European architects, theorists, and historians to American audiences, leaving a mark still discernible today.
