The Archi-Miesian Body of In-Formation-Fractals
Since architecture is now being absorbed into the ever growing global market economy generated by International Capital, it is perhaps time to re-assess and question the nature and role of architecture within the context of a tradition that has not completely forgotten the memory of the question of Being. Not only are the stakes unimaginably high in this absorption into the game of capitalism, but it is all the more urgent since we are now at the brink of moving into the era of the so-called new-biological civilization that has profound ramifications for all aspects of life on Earth. The project for the studio is framed in such a manner as to address fundamental issues pertaining to the metaphysics of architecture, and radicalize the conception of architecture beyond the confinements of anthropological humanism. In so doing, it hopes to rediscover the inexhaustible dimension implicit within architecture, which is inextricably linked to fundamental questions about existence and world-making.
The studio attempted to map the genesis and evolving patterns of information that vibrate as they cohere and materialize into architectural form. The ontological dimension invoked here was that of a monad or an incomplete totality, which could be also described as an inconsistent multiplicity or a singularity that is nonetheless endowed with a symbiotic economy similar to that of a jungle. The resulting paradox seemed to lie in the contradictory juxtaposition of the shimmering but nocturnal desert of Mies in relation to the multiplicitous and chaotic configurations of the jungle. The studio did not attempt to resolve this paradox but instead heightened the tension by situating the Jungle within the Desert, not as an oasis but as a virtualization of the invisibility of the Jungle of multiplicity within the Desert of nothingness.
