The Recursive Library (aka, Library of the Turing Dimension)
Ushered into the dawn of a new era by computation, speculations such as those once entertained by medieval monks concerning the number of angels that can dance on the tip of a pin no longer appear to be as strange, bizarre and esoteric, if not ridiculous, as we once thought, for the simple reason that all the information content contained in all the books that have ever existed since time immemorial could be compressed onto a size that is just as big if not smaller than the tip of a pin. As a theoretical possibility, this tiny bit of quasi-omniscient particle could be implanted and integrated into the functional behavior of a human brain, thereby allowing humanity to witness the becoming alive of Johnny Mnemonic, a gnostic incarnation of omniscience in the Age of Digital Simulation. Furthermore, given the fact that the information content of the physical universe is somewhere between the orders of 1090 and 10120 bits, such a radical transformation of world views and life-world relations cannot occur without a fundamental shift in paradigm that is grounded upon an information-theoretic conception of the world as a computational monad.
The goal of the studio was to design a new model for a library that is an expression of a digital monad: a web of interconnections or an inconsistent multiplicity which grows and self-organizes itself out of random mutation of codes. As such, it bypassed conventional models of global classification systems by allowing it to develop, grow and mutate based on neighborhood relationships as well as on virtual correlations. The studio deployed cellular automata as a recursive engine to engender autocatalytic reactions which were mapped to form the configuration space of the library.
