The Architecture Slide Library (204 Fayerweather) is a student-curated facility supervised by a faculty board composed of history professors and studio critics. Our collections seek to provide context to the school's pedagogical mission across the visual disciplines of architecture, graphic design, and art, as well as related movements in publishing and technology. The slide library has a long history of service to the students and faculty of the Architecture School, and is currently refining and redirecting its resources to provide the best possible assistance in an explosive new world of digital media formats. The slide library is open to all current GSAPP students on a daily basis. We invite you to visit our facility, borrow materials, and help us design our collection for the future.

The vast 35mm collection, in excess of 100,000 slides, covers faculty research interests, images used in history courses, work presented by guest lecturers, and a solid survey of world architectural history from antiquity to the present day. The slide library takes special pride in its attention to the work of emerging architects of the last ten years. The collection grows daily as student staff add new images selected by professors, critics or the student curator. Students, faculty, and friends of the school are encouraged to suggest additional images.

Our fifteen-year collection of lecture videos is our most popular circulating collection. All GSAPP Evening lectures, including many prominent and distinguished practitioners and theorists, are archived and available for student and faculty use. Many of these lectures are now available on DVD and will soon be available in other on-demand digital formats. The remainder of the collection is in VHS format. In addition to lectures, the video collection includes conferences, films, animations, and related subject matter.

Slide library staff members are students from the architecture, historic preservation, urban planning, and real estate development programs. The facility hires work-study students at the beginning of every semester and provides an ideal opportunity for them to gain a sweeping familiarity with all aspects of architecture and design history, as well as help pay for the expense of college.

Current Architecture School graduate students and faculty are permitted to borrow all slide library materials (including lecture videos) for presentations, study or other academic purposes. The slide library is open from 9am to 1pm during fall and winter semesters, and 6pm to 10pm during the summer, school holidays excluded. Slide library staff can be reached during open hours at 212-854-5118.
