Rosanne Haggerty, former student of GSAP's Real Estate program, is a recent recipient of the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation Fellowship. She was awarded the 'genius grant' for her work creating innovative housing and programs for the homeless of New York City. Haggerty founded Common Ground in 1990 to preserve and transform the bankrupt and decrepit Times Square Hotel into the nation's largest supportive housing residence. Today the building is the largest example of permanent, affordable supportive housing for homeless and low-income individuals in the country. In the ten years since its inception, Ms. Haggerty has built Common Ground into a $16 million organization that provides housing for almost 1,500 tenants, manages four residential buildings and operates several small venture businesses and employment projects to assist tenants in returning to the work force.
"We believe that to rebuild an individual's life from homelessness, one requires more than a home, more than good health, more than a job and more than a supportive community -- the entire package is necessary," said Ms. Haggerty. "And that is what Common Ground provides."
Ms. Haggerty is not yet sure exactly how she will use her grant. Of the Fellowship she says, "Its a wonderful problem to have. Its a lot to live up to."
