Authenticity and Innovation:
Ideals for Design with Old Buildings

The basic business of preservation - keeping old buildings around so that we can continue to learn from them - is inescapably a matter of innovation and authenticity, applying the best of today's creative possibilities to carry valued meanings of old buildings into the future and enriching them with their own.
Presentations by :
Giorgio Bianchi of the Renzo Piano Building Workshop of Genoa, Italy, will present projects of the Workshop, including Beaubourg, Genoa Harbor, and recent projects in the United States, the Morgan Library, and the Michigan Law School.
The issues presented in this work will be discussed by Robert Campbell, Senior Fellow in the National Arts Journalism Program at Columbia University, and architecture critic of the Boston Globe; and Jorge Otero-Pailos, Professor, Historic Preservation at Columbia University.
In celebration of the announcement of the James Marston Fitch Professorship in Historic Preservation, Dean Bernard Tschumi will present his work with old buildings, notably, the Studio National des Arts Contemporains.
The day will begin with registration and coffee at 9:30 am. Lunch will be served to those who pre-register. RSVP to: psb1@columbia.edu
