ARCHITOURISM: ARCHITECTURE AS A DESTINATION FOR TOURISM
Friday and Saturday, November 15 and 16, 2002

The Temple Hoyne Buell Center for the Study of American Architecture at Columbia University will present a major conference on Friday and Saturday, November 15 and 16, 2002, entitled ARCHITOURISM: ARCHITECTURE AS A DESTINATION FOR TOURISM. The conference will explore the relationship between architecture and contemporary practices of tourism. An accompanying exhibition will open on November 16 and run through December 13.

Architectural icons from Mont Saint Michel and the Alhambra to the Taj Mahal have long served as tourist attractions. So what's new about the Guggenheim Bilbao and other buildings by contemporary architects to which visitors are flocking? How is tourism today being shaped by architecture? How are architects and designers accommodating contemporary practices of tourism? How does this new tourism "niche" differ from others like ecotourism, heritage tourism, and art tourism? How do architectural monuments and memorials engage today's culture of spectacle?

More than two dozen participants from around the world will put these questions into historical and cross-disciplinary perspective. Art critic Lucy Lippard and tourism theorist Dean MacCannell will present keynote lectures on Friday evening at 6:30 pm in Wood Auditorium. On Saturday, four panel sessions framed around "motives" for tourism-"Authentic," "Exotic," "Escapist," and "Spectacular"-will continue the discussion.

The exhibition, featuring work by ten international artists and architects, will open in the Arthur Ross Gallery on Saturday evening at 7 pm.

The conference and exhibition are free and open to the public. For more information, please visit our website at www.arch.columbia.edu/buell.
