What does it mean to study women in architecture today? Please join us for a discussion on the potential and challenges of the scholarship of this ever urgent topic. Ines Sanchez de Madariaga will present her work on Matilde Ucelay, the first woman architect in Spain, who struggled to practice during Franco's rule. Ines Sanches de Madariaga is a Professor of Urban and Regional Planning at the Madrid School of Architecture where she directs the first Spanish group on gender, architecture, and city planning, which she founded. She received her MSc from Columbia University, and her PhD from the Universidad Politecnica de Madrid. She has been a visiting professor at Columbia, the London School of Economics and the Bauhaus School of Architecture. She has also contributed to a number of advisory commissions, including the Helsinki Group on gender and science, has held public office in Spain, and co-directs the EU-US Gendered Innovation Project at Stanford University. Her book on Matilde Ucelay is forthcoming.
