About the studio

Creating a Special Chinatown District will allow the neighborhood to address the challenges it faces today by building upon its existing assets, diversity, and infrastructure.

This district would override existing zoning rules, and allowing for the implementation of broader land use and zoning provisions. The District would include five subdistricts, which would preserve certain areas and industries, while steering development into other areas of the neighborhood.

Overview of Special District

The Special Chinatown District would maintain the existing mixed use character of the neighborhood, which we regard as a strength. The purpose of the District is not to segregate uses, but rather to encourage a concentration of certain uses in optimal locations. It would maintain the current mixed-income, live/work nature of the community, while allowing room for the economic growth in the neighborhood.

This Special District would include five subdistricts. This will facilitate the preservation of certain areas and industries, while steering development into other areas of the district. There will be two preservation subdistricts: the Historic Core and the Garment Center. The zones where commercial and residential development would be focused include Chatham Square, Residential Core, and Inter-Bridge area.
