About Chinatown

Chinatown is located in downtown Manhattan, near the Lower East Side, Little Italy, and the East River. Chinese immigrants have been living in this area of Manhattan since the 1800s.

About the study area

The studio's study area was defined by concentration of Asian residents (based on U.S. Census 2000) and the location of nearby garment shop. While the area surrounding the garment shops does not have a very high population of Asian residents, the garment industry is an economic cornerstone of Chinatown. The studio analyzed zoning and land use, economics and demographics, and housing conditions within the study area.
