Studio_Description:
The studio will revisit the recent addition of the Rose Planetarium to the Museum of Natural History. Because the addition encompasses a number of significant issues, from its urban context to the status of hiruction, we believe the problem should provide an excellent opportunity to test the full potential of new design techniques. The existing building uses cubic and spherical volumes to produce clear distinctions between interior and exterior, volume and line, transparent skin and solid mass. The goal for each student will be the use of digital desigstoric structures, to the use of new materials and construction strategies to produce unprecedented architectural effects that flow from topological surfaces and component arrangements in variegated series, and apply these effects on a range of familiar issues in urbanism, program, and textuality to more topical problems of atmosphere and mood. Having completed an initial survey of digital processes and tested these on canonical architectural precedents, we are poised to explore the application of these on a more general synthetic problematic. Though the studio is the second half of a two semester research studio, students from other studio backgrounds are welcome and encouraged to join us, so that a larger, hybrid set of design strategies might be explored and critically assessed.
