    A4003 Comprehensive Core Studio III

INSTRUCTORS: Stern, Marani, Berg, Dean, Easterling, Herdeg, Testa, Vinciarelli

    INTRODUCTION
Housing is an intricate and complex issue subject not merely to specific suite conditions and programs, but to political will, economic constraints, and social concerns. It cannot be considered simply in formal terms. This studio will focus on residence-hall housing at Columbia University. There will be three sites: the first within the main campus; the second overlooking Morningside Park; the third at cathedral Parkway and Broadway. Given Columbia University's particular urban setting and social mix, these sites raise important issues about inner life for undergraduates who come from a wide variety of social, cultural and geographic backgrounds. The new residence halls present a distinct architecture; challenge, which is best met with clusters of apartments and single rooms in buildings that also contain common/social spaces to serve and help cohere large groups of students. And unlike the low-rise residence halls typical of a campus such as Yale or Princeton, this context offers the additional challenge to create a unique version of this traditional type.
A key goal for each student-teams's work is the identification and reinforcement of both the Campus and the Morningside neighborhood as a whole. The new buildings must not only solve the housing problem by providing decent, affordable accommodation along with secure, useful, varied and attractive, shared social space for the use of students, but also contribute to an overall sense of both the Campus and the neighborhood and the inter-relationship of the two.

    SITES
Each student team will select one of the three sites. It is assumed that within each critic's studio at least one team will concentrate on each site to ensure ongoing discussion about the particular challenge offered by each site in the context of the Morningside neighborhood.
